So yes, this is a thing. I was looking at magazines at the grocery store the other day and saw the second issue (not pictured) of this magazine. I figured it was just a theme cover for a gun magazine. I picked it up and started flipping through it and found that it is a full magazine devoted to zombies. It is put out by Guns & Ammo Magazine, and it is full of guns and ammo, but it’s completely devoted to zombie culture, surviving a ZA, and tactics should the walking dead become an everyday occurrence. They even have a blog on the site so go check it out, when you’re done here.
This is a yearly issue that started in 2012, so the second issue (2013) is out and should be available for a couple of months. There is quite a bit of good information in here, even without the zombie theme. How to survive in an emergency situation where food, water, and medicine might be scarce. How to protect yourself from assailants, both alive and undead. They even have very practical accessories like a durable baby carrier that leaves the parent’s hands free should the end come and you have a newborn to take with you.
Of course there are quite a few articles and advertisements for firearms and ammunition, all of which are designed with zombie culture in mind. Wild paint schemes splash across weapons and accessories that are no different than their standard issue counterparts, but hey, if the ZA comes you want to look like you know your stuff right? Everyone will have a weapon, it’s the guy with the skull-themed AR sporting the radioactive tagged scope who will stand out as the go-to guy when everyone else is wondering what’s going on.
The magazine is a good read, not a spoof or a tongue-in-cheek joke. Despite the fictional foundation of the material, each article is presented as serious information. It would also be great for research if you happen to be a writer that likes to delve into the undead genre. The issue is packed with technical information and jargon about firearms, supplies, tactics and defense. I could see this being quite useful in that respect. I highly recommend this magazine, even if you are just looking for something a little different to read.
