In the wake of the bittersweet changing of the guard at George Lucas’ mega entertainment empire many of us were left wondering what was to come of Star Wars games down the road. While Disney bought LucasFilm, ILM, and Skywalker Sound, they closed down the game development arm of the Lucas menagerie. We were looking forward to Star Wars 1313, and all of a sudden that bird was killed right in front of us. I’m glad that we are going to see some rejuvenation of the creative drive behind Star Wars, moving the franchise along with new talent, but was also sad to see a huge chunk of our exposure to that universe let go.
Recent news, however, has given us hope here at Frags and Beer. At E3, Electronic Arts and Disney announced that EA will be given exclusive rights to publish all future Star Wars games. While many, including myself, have some reservations about EA, the developers signed on; Bioware, Visceral, and DICE, give us high hopes for the future of gaming. I know…blah, EA, they crush everything they touch, release broken games blah blah blah, and all the other assorted sundry that clogs every EA forum for every new EA game that comes out. I’ve gone on for hours about how little the average consumer knows about the gaming industry, and how EA isn’t really the big evil corporation everyone who buys a game with a few bugs on launch day make them out to be. Hey, if you just can’t accept that look at it this way, LucasArts didn’t really do much better. Despite the game-breaking bugs though, KOTOR and KOTOR 2 were great games. Star Wars Republic Commando was also fantastic, as were both Battlefront games. They all had issues but they were fun.
Besides, this isn’t EA’s first rodeo with the Star Wars universe. They did help give us The Old Republic, which despite a small population of players, does have a dedicated following. You can’t really blame EA for having such competition as Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft in the MMO market. It’s going to take a fairly amazing game to take either of those titans down. With this announcement also came the exciting confirmation of Star Wars Battlefront 3, which we will be keeping our eyes on and bring you any news we happen to get wind of.
