The Elemental Balance is a new series from creator Zain Shenwari, artist Luke Horsman, and inZane comics. The series starts off with an issue titled “Ground Breaking News” which introduces us to Chloe and Baraka. They are elementals, people who have developed powers by being exposed to powerful elements at the time of their death. This issue gives us a brief insight into Chloe’s life before she rushes off to Kenya to chase a dream. There she finds Baraka and the two are forced to flee the authorities and hide.
The story in this issue gets going fairly quickly, but the hook is slow to set in. It was a little confusing at first as the writer keeps us completely in the dark about what’s going on with the main character until about half way through the issue. Once the hook is set, however, I was invested. Zain builds an interesting world for his characters from the outset. This issue sets up a good foundation, and I’m interested to see where this goes. It looks like, from the images from the next issues, it will be world spanning and include people from multiple backgrounds. This issue was a good introduction to this series so far.
The art caught my eye when I saw a preview for the series a few weeks back, and the full issue didn’t disappoint. Luke Horsman’s line work is fantastic. His style is unique, and while it’s not hyper realistic, it’s not cartoony either. It’s sort of reminiscent of John Romita Jr’s work with his own style. I enjoyed every panel of this book, and hope to see a lot more from Luke. The pages have a lot of movement and detail. The characters look great against wonderful backgrounds. The pencils are up there with the best that I’ve seen from any company, large or indie.
This book is definitely worth checking out. inZane is putting it through Kickstarter, with the first issue coming very soon. You can get more information on their site. Give it a look if you’re wanting to jump into something new and unique.
