Not that I’m surprised, but Steve Rogers is about to be back to his young self, and once again bearing the name Captain America. As usual Marvel is settings things back to normal in the Marvel Universe after last year’s shakeups, including the death of Wolverine, the new Thor, and Cap passing his shield to his old friend Sam. When I covered the changes in Thor and Wolverine I mentioned we would eventually see these events reversed, but I wasn’t sure it would be this soon. Looking over social media around this announcement shows that fans are relatively pleased with this, but of course there’s the odd comment about the shield, what about Sam, and someone even wondering how they were bringing him back to life (he’s not dead…).
Captain America: Steve Rogers comes to us at the end of this year, but it won’t be replacing Sam Wilson’s own run as Cap. According to the writer there won’t be any sort of jr./sr. or captain/lieutenant role between the two. They’re both Captain America, each with their own mission. Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz will be the creative team bringing the star-spangled hero back to the front lines of the fight against evil in the Marvel Universe.
Of the two different styles of books with Sam and Steve, Nick Spencer said:
For me, it’s great, because I get to tell two very different kinds of Captain America stories. If you’re liking what we’re doing in CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON, with a more topical, of-the-moment take, we’ve got a lot more of that coming your way; but if you’re looking for that classic, timeless version, the one that’s steeped in the Greatest Generation with Cap fighting the face of true evil, now we’ve got that for you as well. I think they’ll complement each other nicely.
Cap’s new design mixes a highly modern uniform with a throw-back shield that holds a few secrets. Not only does the shield split into two pieces, giving him a weapon on each arm, but the top also emits an energy blade when Steve needs to be able to cut something.
