UPDATE: Due to the behavior of people involved in this project directed at me we will not being doing the promised follow-up when this project launches. I can’t, in good conscience, recommend this site to my readers based on the practices of those involved with the project.
We’ve been covering the response to the gaming community’s loud call for more competition, and a higher ethical standard in gaming media, and the resulting sites that have either changed their policies, cemented their stance on ethics, or new sites that are rising up in response. One of those sites, proposed to start work in early 2015, will be Startbutton.net, a community driven aggregate review site similar to, or more precisely an answer to Metacritic.
One of the big differences between Startbutton and other proposed sites will be the open source development. It will also be one of the biggest challenges for the project. Pulling a team together to cooperate, build, and maintain a web application, or site, will take a drive and dedication to the project that will make it a true labor of love. This format, if successful, will also build a site as close to the community as one can get.
We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this site, and others, as the dynamic shifts in games media. When more information is made available we’ll bring it to you, and hope to add Startbutton to our list of sites striving for a higher ethical standard. Stay tuned, we hope to bring you more from Startbutton.net in 2015.
