The Magdalena is another comic book that I discovered around the time I returned to collecting back in the late 90’s early 00’s. Having been a little burned out on superhero comics, finding this, and Lady Pendragon was a breath of fresh air. I loved the Arthurian fantasy of Lady Pendragon, and it went hand in hand with the biblical connection and historical fantasy of The Magdalena.
The story is, The Magdalena is descended from Jesus and Mary Magdalene, following the theory that the two were married and had children. Down through the ages many different women have been The Magdalena as it is sort of a title, and part of a secret order that works for the Roman Catholic Church. Secret missions, demon hunting, and fighting to defend the church are her primary duties, but the story lines branch out and we even see some strife between her and the church in later issues.
There have been four women to carry the title, but the one that gets the most page-time is Patience. Like all other Magdalenas, her powers give her the ability to look into another person’s heart and see their sins. She uses this to save people, but when they can’t be saved, or there are demons to fight, she carries an arsenal of weapons, the most notable being the Spear of Destiny. In case you don’t know the legend, that’s supposed to be the roman legionnaire’s spear used to pierce Jesus Christ’s side while he was on the cross. From time to time she is assisted by, or working against, the Inquisition which is another secret organization within the church.
All in all, the books have very good art, and some great story. Unfortunately, like Lady Pendragon, they are too short. Like Lady Pendragon, The Magdalena is released in short arcs with sometimes years between. I don’t know if sales are too soft, or they don’t think they can maintain an ongoing story for either, but I for one would love to see an ongoing run of both books. Overall great reads, so if you can find back issues pick them up.
