Marvel has been keeping a lid on this character for awhile now, just giving us little hints and teasers over the last few months. Finally, with the last issue of Amazing Spider-Man we got to see Peter meet Silk as she is released from the secure lab/basement/cell that she was kept in. We also got a rundown of her powers as the meeting between the two turned a little violent.
Silk, as teased months ago, is a young woman who was at the same place where Peter was bitten by the friendly neighborhood radioactive spider all those years ago. Apparently, that same spider found one more person to bite before it crawled off to die. Where has she been though? Well, from what little we know so far, a man named Ezekiel Sims has kept her locked away ever since, to protect her from Morlun.
We find out, from their little fight that Silk’s powers are not exactly the same as Spider-Man’s, and that they share a fairly intense connection through their spider sense. One of the biggest differences is Silk’s webs are organic, coming from her fingertips, and the webs aren’t just sticky, they can be sharp as well. Spidey also notices that she is much faster than him during their battle. He also notes that her spider sense seems to be better, but it could just be her increased speed allowing her to react faster to what they both can sense. Finally her strength, he notes, is not quite on par with his. All-in-all she is a faster, more agile spider while Spider-Man has a little more brute force behind him.
The last issue that we saw her in was a bit bi-polar, in that she comes out of her cell angry because she thinks Morlun will now be able to find her. Then Spidey convinces her Morlun is dead and she’s fine. Then a random quip about having killed him twice already has her thinking that Morlun could be alive and kicks off the major battle that ends with the two making out on a New York rooftop. So really, a lot like all of Peter’s relationships.
In the end we still don’t know what Silk’s role will be in Spidey’s life. Will she become his student, learning to use her powers for good? His lover, or more like family, since in a way they are like cousins? Will she turn dark, and become someone Spidey has to put away? Or will this be a flash in the pan character that we’ll see for awhile but who will eventually just disappear from the pages until they need someone to liven things up? We’ll see, but I think this can open up a whole new line of stories, problems, and experiences for Spider-Man.
