That’s right folks, I bring this news to you with mixed feelings. According to an Associated Press article today Disney bought Lucasfilm Ltd, Industrial Light and Magic, Skywalker Sound, and the rights to both Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movie franchises for 4.05 Billion Dollars! To add to this news, according to the AP article, Disney plans to release episode 7 in 2015, followed by episodes 8 and 9 with new movies to follow every two or three years after. According to the article Lucas will remain a creative consultant on the future movies, and the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, will become the President. You can read the details there, you don’t come here for news. You come here for this pretty face.
I said I bring this news with mixed feelings, and anyone that knows me knows why. I have already seen the reaction, some people are elated, some angry, so many are so sure this is the perfect move. Before you throw up your arms in triumph and shout ‘down with Lucas!’, remember Pirates 4? We’ve seen what Disney can do to a franchise, running movie after movie until we just don’t care. Also something to remember, there is a terrible curse that has become ever so popular in recent years…reboot. On the other hand, they did give us Iron Man, The Avengers, the first Pirates of the Carribean and a whole slew of other fantastic movies.
I am torn on this. I am excited, I want to see more Star wars. I am worried, will Disney be able to deliver when money, not story telling, is the goal? I am sad, I grew up with the first trilogy and despite the lack luster delivery I enjoyed the new ones (yes I know, gasp, did I just say that?!) This could be a great opportunity to expand the Star Wars universe into the other stories, books, and comics that are out there, but it could lead to oversaturation, loss of interest, and in the end a shameful display of quantity over quality that plagues some movie franchises.
We are going to follow this news, hope for the best, and maybe try to influence what we can at this modest little webzine. My head is swimming with the possibilities, trying to keep control on the fears and trepidation. Our first hope, the new new hope, is that they follow the Thrawn Trilogy that came after the original movies in novel form. It would mean recasting, something that leaves a terrible taste in my mouth, but if they want to do this right they need to lead into Luke’s story as a teacher, and Han and Leia giving the universe the first of the next generation of Jedi. Let’s hope for the best and try not to fear the worst.
