Exilium is a SciFi comic from writer Ben Slabak and artist Salo Farias with colors by Marc Sintes and HdE on letters. The book is published by Alterna Comics as part of their newsprint line. The story follows the aftermath of refugees coming to Earth from their own destroyed planet, and inadvertently bringing their attackers with them. The refugees face a multitude of issues and conflicts in their new home. Not everyone on Earth is welcoming to the alien race that is seeking help. When the aliens’ old enemy shows up, Humans and aliens form an alliance to defend the only home either has left.
Exilium’s story is a little bit Alien Nation, a touch of V, and a splash of Independence Day. That’s not to say the story is unoriginal, but the inspiration of good science fiction is unmistakable. This story follows a small group of fighters who are part of a larger army defending Earth. Nia is the leader of the band made up of Ken, and an alien named Tr’u (pronounced tuh-ROO). The book opens up right away with the action, mecha, lasers, and space ships. Earth’s forces are low on supplies, ammunition, and numbers. They hatch a desperate plan to contact the mysterious Exilium for help. The first issue moves quick. It shows the desperation of the Earth forces as they race against time and depleted resources.
There’s a real sense of camaraderie with the team we follow in the story. The dialogue feels natural with all characters. We’re given a little bit of history in a very cool flash back scene which gives us some insight into Nia’s character rather than just being an info-dump. Issue one is a good start to the story and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
Salo’s art is fantastic, and enhanced greatly by Marc’s colors. Scenes and backgrounds look suitably battle-worn and neglected. The line work is clean and action translates clearly from panel to panel. It’s one of the better looking new books I’ve read in recent months. It reminds me a lot of some of my favorite military anime like Macross or 08th MS Team. The art compliments the story perfectly and together they give us a great book.
You can pick the book up this month from your local shop for just $1.50, or order it from Alterna’s site.
