I am increasingly struck dumbfounded by the level of childishness and pettiness of some of the gamers I run into online. I was reminded today of that while playing as commander in Battlefield 4. First, for those who don’t know, BF4 has a mode where you don’t play as a soldier, but as the commander, giving orders to squads, dropping supplies and vehicles, spotting enemy units, and nuking them with cruise missiles. It’s quite a fun feature, if your team pays attention and works as a team. Of all the features planned for BF4 this and VOIP were the most highly anticipated. In fact, these two features missing from BF3 caused veritable fits at their absence. People said awful things about EA, DICE, developers, and anyone else they could think to blame for not having VOIP and commander mode in BF3. Despite this, despite the crying and the shouting, so few people take advantage of these features now.
More often than not, when I jump into a server, I wind up in a squad where no one talks, and some don’t even have the hardware to do so. Most times only one side, or neither, has a commander which is one of the biggest factors in winning a match. Where are the hundreds of voices raised in anger that BF3 had no VOIP or commander mode? From the way people talked, without them the game is nothing.
I played several matches today as commander, and quite enjoyed it, when my team was paying attention. When they did, we won. I’m not bragging, any commander could have done it. There’s just a need for organization, communication, and cooperation and any team that has that will win, every time. If both teams have it, then it will be a damn fun match, every time. So we’re winning, because we had a good tactic, and people were working together. Then it all turned around and my team decided to do whatever they wanted. Whether they were tired of taking orders, or wanted to just start playing their own game I don’t know, but we started losing. At one point, at the end of a particularly bad match of my team doing whatever they wanted, I was called a crap commander.
Yup, you read that right, we lost, not because my tactics were bad, but because the team was doing their own thing. I could understand if they had all been following orders and we lost. That would make me a bad commander, and hell I might be a terrible one that just got lucky a few times, but when most of the team is screwing off our loss had absolutely nothing to do with me.
I don’t know if some just aren’t aware, but that’s the point of the game. If you want to play on your own, worry about your own score, and do your own thing, that’s what team deathmatch is for, or better yet, a different game. When you play BF with its objectives, squads and commanders, you need to work with them. That’s how your team wins, you get more points, everyone has fun, and everyone is happy. If nothing else, when you play lone wolf and your team loses, at least have the common decency to not blame someone else. You contributed to the failure.
So anyway, the point of this rant. I hate sauerkraut! (I don’t actually hate Sauerkraut, but it seems a fitting ending.)
