Today is my birthday, and yesterday we were enjoying C2E2 and these two events came together in a surprising fashion. See, a friend of mine is acquainted with the lovely cosplayer Ani Mia and she was kind enough to find us on the con floor to wish me a happy birthday. Sadly I have to admit that I didn’t recognize her out of costume but when I realized who had come up to say hi I was definitely surprised. It was an honor to meet her in person and it was incredibly sweet for her to make time to say happy birthday during a busy convention.
Ani Mia is a well-known name in cosplay, along with ladies like Ivy Doomkitty and Yaya Han, definitely a celebrity in and out of the convention and cosplay community. I love seeing their work online and in person, and am always blown away at the skill they put into their costumes and characters. You can click on the link above to see some of this lovely lady’s work, and I hope to see her again, perhaps at GenCon in August.
So, thanks again Ani Mia, and my friend Chris for arranging the meet. It was a great birthday gift from them both.
I also got to meet the beautiful, and talented Yaya Han, who has also made a career out of cosplay. How awesome would that be? We stopped by her booth and I picked up a great pic of her as Wonder Woman, and my wife, our official photographer took an awesome picture of us. You’ve may have also seen Yaya on TV in shows like Heroes of Cosplay, and King of the Nerds. She was very gracious and attentive to everyone that stopped by for a picture and an autograph.
The skill that went into the costume she was wearing then was fantastic. There’s a talent there for design and crafting that is inspiring. It’s hard to tell from a picture, but in person I was impressed. The one she’s wearing here was done as a collaboration with Lion Forge Comics for a character and a book I believe. Well worth seeing in person.
It is fantastic that what was once just a hobby, or a convention curiosity, has become something that has made celebrities out of people who are just doing what they love. Some of these cosplayers travel around the world, invited to conventions, judging events, and making new fans everywhere they go. Most of us can only hope to make a career out of something we love so much. To those who go to conventions with the confidence to dress as your favorite characters, keep it up! We love seeing all the great costumes and characters come to life. It has become a staple at these events and a large part of why we go.
So, a huge thank you again to Ani Mia, Yaya Han, Chris Doan, and of course my amazing wife for a great convention experience.
There were a lot of great cosplayers at the convention, and our photographer will be sharing quite a few of them over at her photoblog at Artfully Distracted. You can take the link on the left in a few days to see them.
Our lovely photographer’s blog now has photos from the convention.
