Are you excited? I am. Despite some of the issues with Battlefield 3, it’s been a great game and a lot of fun for awhile now. My only real beef with the Battlefield series so far is how soon 4 is coming out. It’s sort of a mixed, sweet and sour feeling really. I want BF4 to come out soon, but then again I want to keep working on achievements and objectives in BF3 and I know as soon as 4 hits I probably won’t go back to 3. We had a lot of time with BF1942, and BF2, then again with BF2142, then Bad Company 2 hit and EA/Dice seemed to be focused on getting out a lot of BF games fast. I guess it really started with Bad Company but that’s a console game and well, you know how I feel about those. I guess it’s more nostalgia than anything else. My gaming group played MOH:Spearhead for years, only moving to COD4 because it seemed like a good fit, and we played that for quite awhile too.
Anyway, enough of my griping old man voice. BF4 looks great. They’ve gone and updated the Frostbite engine, not unexpected mind you, and a welcome bit of news. There were some issues with the old engine, and a lot of us knew it. Many of us know how this industry works too. While the multitude of whiny kids out there decried EA’s lack of serious updates after awhile, most of us knew what they were probably doing. Why spend time fixing piddly little things, when the plan is to unleash an entirely new engine. Make sure BF3 works well for those who are going to keep playing it, but put your real effort and money into the new engine that will not only fix the old problems, but bring new awesomeness to the table. It’s only logical.
While it does look great, it still looks like BF3. That’s intentional I believe. You want to get a game out that is good, fast, fixed, and fun, why redesign the already amazing visuals. BF3 had it’s faults, but the graphics weren’t one of them. So far we’ve only seen the one map, but it looks great. A nice, tight urban map with a lot of elevation. Watching the game play, going up in the sky scraper, and calling down air strikes, made me want to play it now. Side note: I pre-ordered so I will be playing the beta and will let you all know what’s what.
What’s new about the game reads like a laundry list of awesome. It appears, from the video, that the squad sizes have increased to at least 5. That’s a welcome change for those of us in gaming clans. I’ve also seen, in the SP video at least, that they added the very realistic dual sight to weapons. It’s something that COD did first, but a welcome change to the Battlefield franchise. No more deciding whether to rock the Acog or red dot, or iron sights versus a long-distance scope. Now it looks like you will be able to mix and match more than one sight attachment. Also returning is commander mode, and wow does it look good. Calling air strikes, supply drops and vehicle drops is something that was sorely missed by the community. I have mixed emotions about this one, only because I’ve been on a server (in BF2) where no one listened to the commander, and on servers where the commander was an idiot. I think, overall it’s welcome news.
There’s not much else to say, go to the official site and watch the videos that have been released recently. I think you will enjoy.
