Yah I know, some people think Battlefield 2 was the best ever! I don’t agree. It was great, but it had it’s own set of problems and irritants. I loved Battlefield 3, still do, but there are some things that could be improved upon. That’s obvious, it’s a video game. Show me a perfect video game and I’ll show you a unicorn. We can look forward to some changes with Battlefield 4 that will, in my opinion, make it a much better game than 3 and probably the best Battlefield to date. Today an announcement was released about some features to improve team play, which is awesome, and I broke down the long trailer that was released a few weeks ago and pulled out some telling screenshots. I hope you enjoy.
The first shot that my clan mates and I were excited about is this one. Granted, this is just video of the alpha testers at Dice, but, that’s a 5 man squad. There have been plenty of times we’ve had five of us on and one guy was left out, or we had to make due with two of us in one squad and three in another. At least if it were 6 of us, two three man quads with a pubbie (public player) was better than one guy alone. 5 man squads are going to be so much more versatile in this game.
You can also see the squad bonus progression bar that is talked about later in the release from EA. It appears to be something that charges up as you go and gives the entire squad bonuses the better they do. This should be interesting and eliminate the griping about people doubling up on squad perks.
The next thing I in the video that made me happy was this guy right here. You had to be paying attention, but do you see the little crosshair symbol over that guy’s head? Yup, that’s a recon putting C4 on a tank. As far as I can tell they gave the the explosives back to the recon, the c4 anyway. This is great because not everyone wants to play a sniper that sits back away from the action and gets yelled at all map. Being able to infiltrate, scout, and destroy assets was a key purpose of the recon unit in BF2 and BF2142 and I’m glad they are getting that ability back. Hopefully this isn’t just for the alpha release.
The last highlight is kind of hard to show in a screenshot. You have to watch the video, there at the end when it’s doing the montage of new features and shows the commander pay close attention to the knife fight. It looks a lot like the guy getting attacked turns the knife on the attacker and counters it. That is awesome on so many levels. The knife in BF3 has always been a source of contention, and irritation. It’s great when you are on the giving end of a knife kill, but being helpless as you watch the knife animation on the receiving end can be extremely irritating. Now it looks like you’ll at least have a chance at survival.
