All righty, some time ago I warned all BF3 players about Digital Anarchy here. Their server is a mess and they are proud of it. This isn’t about them though, not this time. I haven’t been on Digital Anarchy since that post. This is about the Odin Brigade server.
They are certainly not as bad as DA, not by a long shot, but recently I have had, and witnessed, some bad experiences with a couple of their admins. See, their server has 24 hr admins on call, which is nice, and an auto-kick/kill feature for key words that most people would consider irritating or rude. The problem with the automatic system is, it doesn’t take context into account. A few weeks ago someone on the server said something rude and called someone a noob. Well, not knowing noob is one of their black listed words at the time I said something to the effect of ‘You shouldn’t call people noob’. I got auto-killed for it, and they had a heck of a time getting this message off the middle of my screen that says I was auto-killed for disrespect. The admins said I should be respectful. They didn’t even bother to look at the context of what I said. Not five minutes later one of the clan members from the server said something quite rude over public chat and nothing happened to him. Obviously the rules don’t apply to [ODIN] members. I was irked, but I chalked it up to one admin just being a jerk.
Yesterday I ran afoul of their disrespect bot again. Someone, in an irritated fit, on our team asked ‘What the F— is this team doing?!’ Being a bit of a sarcastic person myself I said “Losing just to make you mad.” Apparently you and mad, because of the standard troll response ‘you mad?’ are on the black list when used together. I got auto-killed, but didn’t know at the time so I asked. And then asked again, but no one would tell me what I did other than to say I should be respectful. Then I repeated what I said and asked what it was that I said that was disrespectful. I got auto-killed again and they pointed out the ‘you mad’ in my sentence. I said they should look into that because those two words are not always intended to be disrespectful, and come up a lot in normal conversation. They just kept repeating ‘be respectful’, and ‘calm down.’ Of course, just like being accused of cheating, no one likes to be falsely accused of something. I let it drop, and thought of this post, but wasn’t sure I wanted to write something up yet.
See, there are so few decent servers on BF3 right now and some of my favorites are usually empty. Odin Brigade isn’t always a bad server, but sometimes it’s terrible. Today convinced me that I needed to say something to the community at large about this server. Turns out this guy got in a chopper, with 5 teammates, and couldn’t pull it out of a dive. They crashed, they all died. Accident. One of the ODIN guys, TiefulHunden-I, decided to kick him from the server for it. The guy came back and asked why he was kicked and the admin explained. Then I asked, ‘wasn’t it an accident’ and a couple other guys chimed in. Everyone was told to drop it and read the rules. Ever one to not let everything drop, I pointed out that their rules do not permit punishing someone for team killing, yet the admin punished the player for team killing. He confirmed the rule exists and said it’s because people abuse it. I think he missed the irony.
It’s not likely any of them will read this and if they do it’s very likely they will just make some excuse or try to twist things. I’m sure quite a few will say I was in the wrong, but hey, we can’t all agree. If you keep your mouth shut and just play on their server I’m sure you will find it an adequate server to play on. You really can’t have any kind of conversation there because you really don’t know what will get you in trouble. You can’t accidentally TK anyone now for fear an admin might kick you, despite their rule about not punishing for TKing. It’s not a terrible server, but it certainly isn’t a great one. It sucks there are so few, but I will definitely be on the lookout for more after this.
Well, sadly the response I expected, but hoped for once I wouldn’t get. I was of course called many names by the admins and supporters of the admins. Instead of discussing it they resorted to ridicule and attempts and heavy-handed intimidation. It’s another server that would rather tell players that they aren’t needed rather than actually consider that there might be an issue. They did turn everything in their favor as expected, and pretty much confirmed that rules for the player base do not pertain to the members themselves. Oh well, another server bites the dust on my favorites list, but *shrug*, I’m not needed there anyway. I’ll keep looking out for you all, and letting you know which servers to avoid. I do think I need a list of good servers going though. I can think of a couple, I’ll have to find some more.
Heh, more update. To be fair I should have posted on their forums first, but because of the way I was treated on the server I didn’t expect a very good reception. Of course, there was no chance they were at all in the wrong. I posted there like I should have and I got the typical response. I am just a troll, a child, completely in the wrong, and the admins have done nothing at all wrong. It’s cool though the irony is humorous. Through it all I’ve been civil. I’ve not called anyone names. I was fair to say their server wasn’t terrible, etc etc. With all that I’ve still be called names, accused of trolling and the like. Just goes to show, on some servers just keep your head down and your mouth shut, and if you feel wronged just walk away and play somewhere else. Cheers readers.
